Local Grids and Site Networks

Local grids and site networks are closed distribution networks which are classified as customer systems for the self-supply of industrial complexes or buildings. They are frequently installed in industrial facilities, computer centers or large buildings with the appropriate infrastructure.

In most cases they include m.v. and l.v. distribution systems, frequently with their own power generation plants, thereby ensuring a reliable power supply in the event of power outages. If adaptations become necessary due to a restructuring or upgrade of the grid and user structure, they must be easily and smoothly implementable in the monitoring and control systems. This, of course, requires scalable and upgradable systems. IDS offers a portfolio of tailor-made solutions to ensure the safe operation and monitoring of their power systems.

IDS Solutions in Computer Centers

Thanks to our experience with numerous implemented projects we know what is important when it comes to the secondary equipment for electrotechnical installations in local grids and site networks. Apart from the connection of a variety of equipment, including bay controllers and protection devices, power meters, intelligent switches, UPS installations as well as stand-by generaring units, it is of vital importance to ensure a degree of availability and redundancy of the installed components of the control system and their transmission pathways. Apart from time-critical controlling of stand-by units and automatic switchover functions, our systems fulfil all requirements on the operation of such specialized installations.

Moreover, we offer solutions permitting the autonomous operation of individual subsystems/installations. Thus, we are able to ensure system operation even in the event of outages of superordinate control levels. If necessary, we also facilitate connections to already existing building services systems via a variety of interfaces.

For medium-voltage applications, we rely on our well-proven products for station automation. These products are being used by the owners of transportation and distribution networks on all voltage levels. Here it is possible, with respect to feed-in systems, to integrate direct interfaces to the previous supplier, together with their profile and data volume.

With low-voltage distribution systems, it is common practice to use bus systems based on ProfibusDP or ModbusTCP/RTU, which are used for connecting the power meters and intelligent l.v. power switches to our system. For this purpose, integrated gateway solutions of the ACOS 7 serie are used which make it possible to use a uniform protocol (IEC 60870-5-104) on the SCADA network for data exchange with all devices.

We directly integrate load-controlled automatic switching functions (e.g. for switchover to a stand-by feed-in units) into our ACOS 7 series, as well as automation functions, such as step sequence controls for the smooth transition to a stand-by power supply. In practice, this is the separation of loads before and after start-up of the stand-by power generating units , as well as step-by-step priority-controlled load connection following a load transfer, in dependence on the available capacity of generating units. External automation processes, such as control of stand-by power generating units or the UPS units can also be connected to our system via communication technology, thus providing all data for visualization and a detailed rendering of automatic functions both via Event Log and images/graphs.

Visualization of Remote Control

For the visualization of remote control we use our well-proven IDS HIGH-LEIT SCADA system which features a wide range of functions, such as, for instance, the topological colouring of lines. It also enables operation via remote terminals, thereby making it possible, for instance, to install such terminals in each building. It is also possible to use existing network structures and set up workstations e.g. in an electrical workshop by means of a terminal server that is being operated in a secure, isolated network zones (DMZ)
