Stadtwerke Meran invests in Modern Telecontrol System
Stadtwerke Meran in South Tyrol, Italy, is a municipal utility company which supplies the inhabitants of the comune di Merano and the visitors to its spa resorts with drinking water. The drinking water for Meran comes from 27 springs and is stored in six water reservoirs. From there, it is pumped to the households in Meran across a distribution network with a total length of 120 km. In emergency cases, the distribution network can also be fed with water coming from five wells and two additional water reservoirs. In 2007, ca. 4 million cubic metres of drinking water were distributed across Meran.
After a long planning phase, Stadtwerke Meran opted for a telecontrol system that enables both the centralized provision of process information related to the water supply network - which previously had been compiled manually – and process operation and monitoring in a central station. These benefits, in combination with improved system availability and an increasingly efficient plant operation, were further motivations to install a telecontrol system from IDS GmbH.
Stadtwerke Meran consistently relies on international standards for transmission protocols and on open, standardized interfaces. The new telecontrol system of Stadtwerke Meran will be connected to the SCADA system owned by Stadtwerke Brixen. Although Stadtwerke Brixen is in charge of system control and maintenance, Stadtwerke Meran will be able to operate its own network independently via separate fixed and mobile workstations.
Since the year 2000, Stadtwerke Brixen has been using a multi-utility SCADA system from IDS for the operation, monitoring and optimization of the power grid and or the water and district-heating supply network. Thanks to system expansions and upgrades to the latest telecontrol release, specific applications of Stadtwerke Brixen’s SCADA system, such as leakage monitoring and reservoir management, can also be used for the facilities of Stadtwerke Meran.
In the city area of Meran, 22 RTUs will be installed in three stages, which communicate with the control system in Brixen via GPRS links.
The project was commissioned in August 2011 and will be concluded in February/March 2012.
