Monitoring of the Sewer Network in Hamburg
A daily total of ca. 380,000 cubic meters of wastewater is pumped through Hamburg’s sewer network at dry weather; in the event of heavy rainfalls, up to 1.2 million cubic meters of wastewater are pumped top the Köhlbrandthöft/Dradenau treatment plant. Here, the wastewater is purified completely by biological means.
The pipeline network covers an area of 300 square km and has a total length of 5,400 km. Hamburg’s sewer network has the following peculiar feature: in the inner city, there are two sewer networks, one of which is installed 20 m below the other, both featuring collectors and transport sewers.
For the operation and monitoring of the sewer system, Hamburger Stadtentwärsserung (Hamburg Public Sewage Company – HSE) has installed an IDS HIGH-LEIT control system in 1996; in 2006, IDS received the order for upgrading the system with state-of-the-art technology. The control system monitors the sewer network and controls the remotely controllable slide valves which, in turn, regulate the wastewater flow between the upper local sewer system and the lower-level collector system. Additionally, pumping stations and stormwater retention tanks are connected and the data from level measurement stations are recorded.
System Structure
The control system is designed as a redundant computer system with hot-standby features and is distributed over two sites in Hamburg which are connected to each other via a duplex router link. The processes are connected via nine front-end computers IDS 850; data transmission to the control system takes place via a duplex Ethernet link.
The operation and monitoring of the sewer network takes place in the control centre via two workplaces; additionally, three remote workstations and five mobile workplaces for on-call duty are available.
In the substations, IDS 550 and IDS 850 RTUs are installed. Automation processors are available for decentralised control functions.
