Network Control System for EKO Steelworks

Today, EKO Stahl GmbH (EKO Steelworks) is the most important employer in the region of Eisenhüttenstadt (literally: “city of ironworks”) in the state of Brandenburg in East Germany, close to the Polish border. Energy supply and management (electricity, gas, heat and water) is in the hands of VEO – Vulkan Energiewirtschaft Oderbrücke GmbH - , which also supplies the adjacent industrial zones with electricity and heat from the industrial power station.

Project Description

In 1994, IDS GmbH won the contract for the erection of the SCADA and telecontrol system. The SCADA system is designed particularly for the operation and monitoring of

  • the ca. 160 transformer stations with voltage levels of 110, 30, 10.6 and 0.4 kV
  • the industrial power plant with an installed capacity of 153 MW
  • a cable network with ca. 170 km of cable ducts
  • the supply with electricity, water, gas and heat of EKO Stahl, and the supply with electricity and heat  ca. 120 industrial enterprises in the neighbourhood

The SCADA system was continually upgraded over the past years; furthermore, additional supply points were connected which are continually being updated.

System Concept

In its current configuration, the SCADA system features a redundant IDS HIGH-LEIT control system with more than 50 IDS 850 RTUs. Approximately 30,000 updated information elements and ca. 70 process displays are available. Third-party RTUs (ABB Indactic I22 and SAT 1703) and station control equipment from AEG (AEG-ILSA) were also connected. There are also interfaces with the SCAN 3000 process control system from Honeywell and the load control system from PSI.

The IDS HIGH-LEIT SCADA system provides user-friendly functions for topological network visualisation. For the transient recording of faults, IDS MR 850 recorders are available.
