Digital Station Automation System for the Thyrow Transformer Station (110kV)

By the end of 2005, the German grid operator E.ON edis had finished the upgrading of the 110kV substation of the Thyrow transformer station. The Thyrow transformer station features 23 bays with 250 MVA and one 140 MVA network transformer. In the future, this substation is to be monitored and controlled by the network control centre in Potsdam, near Berlin.
In August 20093, IDS received the contract for the turn-key delivery of a digital station automation system IDS LISA (IDS SAS) for the 110kV substation which includes the following features:

  • 1 station control computer IDS 850 which is connected to the E.ON edis network control centre via telecontrol link according to  IEC 60870-5-101
  • 1 station control terminal with two monitors for remote operation and control
  • 23 bay computers IDS 850
  • 1 FO distribution cabinet for connection of bay controllers to the station control computer
  • 900 m of FO underground cable
  • 1 USP cabinet with inverter for a secure power supply
Commissioning in Several Stages

The implementation of the project was characterised by high project-specific demands. The new building that was to replace the former transformer station was erected while operations continued. Given that the commissioning of the project took place in several stages, IDS had to adapt  the functions of the new station control system to the current upgrade stage.
The project as a whole was accepted and taken over by the customer in November 2005.
