Interfacing of Protection Devices in Power Grids via IEC 61850 Protocol
Stadtwerke Passau (Passau Municipal Utility) own an IDS SCADA system for the operation and monitoring of their electricity, gas and water installations. In the course of a partial revamping programme for the modernisation of the secondary installations in the Bahnhofstrasse switchgear station, IDS GmbH implemented interfacing of the digital protection equipment via IEC 61850 communication protocol.
For this purpose, the 33 protection devices and bay controllers were connected to an IDS gateway in a ring structure via switches. The IDS gateway is based on an IDS 850 RTU and serves as interface between the IEC 61850 ring and the LAN/WAN area of SW Passau’s telecontrol network. Data communication between the gateway and the SCADA system takes place via redundant frontend computers and via the standard communication protocol IEC 60870-5-104.

Integration Bus X4 in the ACOS NMS Network Management Suite and the IDS HIGH-LEIT SCADA System
New legal frameworks, unbundling and the obligation to report to the Federal German Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) make new and complex demands to energy suppliers’ IT infrastructure. Thanks to the flexible and system-independent X4 process bus from SoftProject, workflows can be easily adapted to and integrated in existing IT infrastructures.
A typical application for the combination solution is the seamless interconnection of the SCADA system and other systems, e.g. geographic information systems, electronic data management systems or the remote meter reading system. The automatic exchange of equipment data and network diagrams considerably reduces engineering costs and efforts.
X4 connects HIGH-LEIT and ACOS NMS with standard Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (e.g. SAP R/3), thus creating efficient interfaces for the booking of costs accruing from the operative fault management and maintenance processes. Moreover, X4 enables the provision of further technical information from the process to customer upon request. The X4 integration bus provides reusable, industry-specific process templates and more than 100 ready-made standard adapters fort he integration of end systems. For instance, it enables the creation, provision and exchange of messages in UN/EDIFACT format.

Mobile Networks: Changes for Alarm Emission via SMS
Vodafone is going to stop the operation of the D2-SMS centres for ISDN and analog services as of 28 February, 2008. SCADA systems which have so far sent their alarm messages via Vodafone (0172-2278020) should be at once switched over to SMS transmission via GSM modem. If this change applies to your alarm concept, please contact our specialist to discuss and coordinate further activities.
At the end of 2007, German Telekom have exchanged the hardware of the D1-SMS dial-in server. Since then, some of our customers have reported difficulties in establishing a connection for sending SMS messages (0171-2521002). If you find that you have the same problems, we recommend a changeover from SMS to GSM modem for alarm emission.
